One more possible stray from Beddome's Library

In a catalogue of 1892 I came across this entry

Annesley (S), Life of the Rev, Thomas Brand contemp. red mor., g.e., (probably by S. Mearne jun) Sides covered with delicate gt. tooling, with drawer-handle stamps, autograph of Benjamin Beddome, the hymn-writer, on title, 1692, 12mo. (251), May 12, Hodgson Myers, £5 Annius (Jo.) Commentaria de Antiquitatibus, lit. rom.

The Puritan Annesley c 1620-1696 was an ancestor of the Wesleys. Brand lived 1635-1691.

This looks to be the same book noted here.

Library Resources for the book

Beddome's one tome was his expansion of the Baptist Catechism. Among resources available in his Library for the task would be the following

106. (1) An abridgement of the late reverend Assemblies Shorter catechism by Thomas Lye 1621-1684 from 1662 bound with
(2) The shorter catechism composed by the reverend Assembly of Divines 1660 and with
(3) A brief and easie explanation of the Shorter catechism by John Wallis 1616-1703

121. An explanation of the shorter catechism, compos'd by the Assembly of Divines at Westminster, 1647 by Thomas Lye 1621-1684 from 1676

216. A short explanation of the Assembly's shorter catechism, in a most familiar way. ... By W. N. Pastor of a congregation in Ipswich. ie William Notcutt 1672-1756

271. Rich jewel of Christian divinity by Immanuel Bourne 1590-1672

319. A plain method of catechizing: with a prefatory catechism, shewing, ministers parents masters ought to be teachers of the first principles of Christian doctrine by Thomas Doolittle 1632?-1707

331. William Fenner's Catechism on the Creed, Lord's prayer, and X. Commandments annexed to his Works.

Graph on Beddome's Reading

NB It was in 1777 that Beddome turned 60 and Wilkins was brought in to assist him, Early in 1778 his son Dr Benjamin died. In the early sixties he had a period of depression and a still growing family. Boswell was born in 1763.

Reading books from the Library

There were well over 400 books in Beddome's library. From 1762, when Beddome was 45, until two years before his death, in 1795, he read over 70 of these books and made a note of the fact in them. He would usually write in Latin perfect or perfectum ie finished and then the date, eg Mense Aprilis 1766 or Mense 10bris 1785, etc. Sometimes there is further comment, such as Cum magna Aprobatione with great appreciation or valde approbat much appreciated. Of a book of poetry by Hercules Collins he notes "All savoury & orthodox but the poetry very bad". Of a book by John Owen formerly owned by others he says Read this Book thro the first part the second Time December 1785. One other book gets a similar note. It is clear that some of the books were obtained second hand or even third or fourth hand. Most of these former owners we know nothing of but some, such as Bernard Foskett, have familiar names. No doubt Beddome read other books as well as those in his library and perhaps he did not always carefully note what he had read. There is no record of any unfinished books. For most years between 1762 and 1793 he would read at least one book and sometimes as many as seven of them each year.
The first book Beddome notes reading is a two volume collection of the works of Johann Arndt (1555-1621) and the last a book on the archaeology of Britain by William Camden (1551-1623). Authors read include Amandus Polanus von Polansdorf 1561-1610; Richard Bernard 1568-1641; Richard Carpenter 1575-1627; Jeremiah Burroughs 1599-1646; Edward Reynolds 1599-1676; Thomas Goodwin 1600-1680; Walter Cradock 1606?-1659; Isaac Barrow, 1630-1677; Samuel Blair 1712-1751, etc, etc.
In the next blog we will give a simple graph of his reading.

Beddome Library Calvin's Institutes

In the volume The Lost Sermons of C. H. Spurgeon Volume II: A Critical Edition of His Earliest Outlines and Sermons between 1851 and 1854 by Christian T George a footnote is found, It says

"The human mind is, so to speak, a perpetual forge of idols" (Henry Beveridge, trans., Institutes of the Christian Religion by John Calvin, Volume 1 [London: James Clarke & Co., Limited, n.d.], 97). Charles later acquired Benjamin Beddome's copy of Calvin's Institutes in which is found, "Wherby we may gather that the wit of man is, as I may so call it, a continuall worship of idols" (The Institution of Christian Religion, Written in Latine by Master John Calvine, and Translated into English Accordyng to the Authors Last Edition, by T N. Wherunto Is Added a Table, to Fynde the Principal! Matters Entreated of in Thy Boke, Conteyning by Order of Common Places, the Summe of the Whole Doctrine Taught in the Same, Seen and Allowed According to the Order Appointed in the Queenes Maiesties Injunctions [imprinted at London in White Crosse Strete by Richard Harrison, 1562, The Spurgeon Library], 25). The Latin reads, "Unde colligere licit hominis ingenium perpetuam, ut its loquar, ase idolorum fabricam" (A. Tholuck, trans., loannis Calvini, Institutio Christianae Religionis: Cum Brevi Annotatione Atque Indicibus Locupletissimis ad Editionem Amstelodamensem Accuratissime Excribi Curavit, Pars Prior [Berolini: Apud Gustanum Eichler, 1834], 79).

Another missing tome from Beddome's Library

Boston 1722

We have already noted that in 1839 in Lumley's Bibliographical Advertiser there is a reference to a two volume set of Pool's Annotations that once belonged to Beddome. In the same catalogue is also this listing

Webb (Rev. John, of Boston, New England) Practical Discourses on Death, Judgment, Heaven and Hell, in 24 Sermons, cr. 8vo. clf. (B. Beddome's Autograph,) 3s. Boston, U. S. 1726

*Strange d 1768. He was pastor at Stratton, Wiltshire (16 miles south west of Bourton) in 1752. Little is known of him. (Presumably he was son to deacon Joseph Strange, mentioned by Holmes, 60, 61. Was Nanny his sister or daughter? Cf fn 43). We know that in January 1751 he and a Mr William Lawrence presented the case to the Baptist Board for building a meeting house in Stratton. Presumably on his death this book passed to Aunt Martha who  then passed it on to Beddome.
